Introduction

This set of charts uses the City of Toronto’s open data on Private Transportation Companies (PTCs) to follow monthly trends in the Greater Toronto Area ridehail market.

Part-Time and Full-Time Drivers

In this section, “part-timers” are those who take (on average) less than 240 trips during a given month. If we change the dividing line then the absolute values change, but the trends remain the same.

Both groups count only drivers who completed at least one trip in the month, the same criterion the Toronto dashboard uses. Vehicles that log in without picking up a passenger would otherwise all land among the part-timers.

Long-Term Trends

Figure 1 shows that although part-timers make up the bulk of the workforce, full-timers obviously make up more of the hours and over half of the trips. Also, confirming the observation from ?@fig-ratios, the role of full-time drivers has become more and more important over time.

Figure 2 shows that part-timers make up a higher proportion of vehicles during the hours from the late morning to the early evening.

Figure 3 shows that there are no particular times that are “part-timer hours” from the point of view of trips.
